Is anyone else's sliding garage door refusing to work only in the afternoon?

My automatic horizontal sliding garage door is acting so wierd lately and I can't figure it out. It works perfectly fine at night or first thing in the morning when I'm leaving for work. But like clockwork, between 1 and 3 pm, the thing just stops responding completley. It won't open and it won't close, and I basically have to leave my car in the driveway until the sun starts going down. I thougt maybe the sunlight was hitting the safety sensors and washing them out, so I tried cupping my hands over them to block the glare while my wife hit the remote, but nothing happened. It's like the motor just gives up. Maybe it's getting too hot inside the casing since the sun beats right on that side of the house in the afternoon? I’m worried something is expanding in the heat and jamming the track, but it doesn't even make a sound when I press the button. Has anybody dealt with this kind of specific timing issue before? It's driving me crazy because everythign seems fine once the temperature drops or the light shifts. I don't want to call a repair guy just for him to show up at 5 pm and tell me it's working perfectly when I know it'll just stop again tomorrow.


That sounds like a classic case of infrared interference combined with aging sensors. Even if you're cupping your hands over them, the sun's IR rays are incredibly strong in the mid-afternoon and can bounce off the driveway surface, entering the sensor housing from angles you wouldn't expect. If the sensors are more than five or six years old, the internal light-emitting diode has likely dimmed significantly. This makes it almost impossible for the receiver to distinguish the beam from the heavy ambient light of the 2 PM sun.

Since you mentioned it doesn't even make a sound when you press the button, you shoud also look at the **thermal overload** on the motor or a failing logic board. If that side of the house is baking in the sun, the temprature inside that plastic casing can easily exceed 130 degrees. Most openers have a safety cutout to prevent the motor from burning out. If the board detects that kind of ambient heat, it won't even try to engage the relay, which explains why you aren't hearing any clicks or humming. Go out there tomorrow at 2 PM and check the diagnostic LED on the motor head. Most units will flash a specific pattern—like two blinks for a sensor blockage or five blinks for a motor error. That will tell you immediately if it's an 'eyes' problem or an internal temperature issue. If it is the sensors, you can acutally buy plastic sun shields or just use a small piece of dark PVC pipe to create a deeper shadow for the lens. It's a cheap fix that ussually beats replacing the whole unit.

But if it turns out to be the heat, you might need to check the track alignment. Sliding doors are way more sensitive to **thermal expansion** than standard overhead ones. If the track is bolted too tight and expands in the heat, it can slightly bow or pinch the rollers. If the motor senses that extra resistance right at the start, it might just shut down to prevent damage. Try a bit of high-quality silicone spray on the tracks, but avoid heavy grease since it just attracts grit and makes the motor work harder.

Could the color of the motor casing be making it worse? My garage gets like an oven by 2 PM, and I've got a dark-colored door that probably absorbs way more heat. If it is that thermal cutoff thing, woud putting a small fan near the motor unit help keep it cool enough to run, or is that just a temporary fix?

Also, does the wall button work when the remote fails? I’ve heard that high heat can sometimes mess with the frequency the receiver picks up. If the wall switch works but the remote doesn't, maybe the radio part is just getting baked by the sun.

Check for Radio Frequency (RF) interference too. I’ve seen solar radiation or even a neighbor’s failing electronic device mess with the signal on older 390MHz units during peak sun hours. If your wall button works but the remote is dead, that’s your answer.

You shoud also inspect the motor's start capacitor. If it’s starting to bulge, the afternoon heat can increase the internal resistance just enough to keep it from giving the motor that initial kick. It’s a cheap $15 fix. If you can move the door easily by hand in manual mode at 2 PM, then it’s definately electrical, not a jammed track.

Check the wiring connections on the back of the motor head. I had a similar issue where a wire was just loose enought that when the plastic housing expanded in the afternoon sun, it pulled the contact just far enough away to break the circuit. It’s also possible you’ve got a 'cold solder joint' on the main board. Those tiny cracks are basically invisible untill the heat makes the board flex slightly, then boom, no power. If you’re comfortable with it, pop the cover off when it’s acting up and gently wiggle the terminal wires to see if it suddenly kicks back to life.
