help please

i have been given a set of wet stones with no instructions can someone tell me what do you wet the stones with. ie water? oil? what angle should the knife, chisel be held at etc there are 2 rectangular(1 white, 1 grey) ones and a boat shaped one. which is used for what?

TIA

These are actually WHETstones, on the basis that whet is to sharpen. You'd probably put oil on them, as they are flat bed-shaped ones, i.e. not round wheels. The angle you sharpen to will depend on the purpose that the knife will be put to and the material it's made of. If the angle is narrow, the blade is sharper but the edge is fragile. If the angle is wider, the edge becomes stronger but will become blunt more quickly because it doesn't need as much wear before the edge becomes thick. Probably 20 degrees would suit most cases.
