Determining the Right Size Sinuous Spring for Your Recliner and Tool Options for Stretching It (2023 Update)

Leather swivel recliner with broken sinuous spring. Measures 17" out but the ones still in measure 19" stretched. What size do I buy and will a trampoline spring puller suffice to stretch it? Have looked at a few YouTube clips on this but they are all for attaching to wooden frame, this chair has them attached to a tubular metal frame with canvas type loops holding the springs.

To determine the size of sinuous spring you need, measure the distance between the two attachment points on the chair frame. This measurement is the length of the spring when it's relaxed and not under tension. If you measure 17" in your case, then you should buy a sinuous spring that matches the length of the broken spring.

A trampoline spring puller may be able to stretch a sinuous spring, but it is not guaranteed to work in every situation, as it depends on the specific design of the spring puller and the size and shape of the spring. A better approach would be to use a tool specifically designed for stretching sinuous springs, such as a sinuous spring stretcher or a sinuous spring installation tool.

Here are steps to replace the sinuous spring on your leather swivel recliner:

  1. Measure the length of the broken spring and compare it to the length of the intact springs.
  2. Purchase sinuous springs of the same length as the intact springs (19" stretched).
  3. A trampoline spring puller may not be suitable for your chair's metal frame with canvas loops. You may need to use pliers to hold the loops while you attach the new spring.
  4. Begin by detaching the broken spring from the canvas loops.
  5. Attach one end of the new spring to the canvas loop on one side of the chair.
  6. Use pliers to hold the other end of the spring in place while you attach the other end to the canvas loop on the other side of the chair.
  7. Repeat the process for the other springs.

Tools needed:

  • Sinuous springs (19" stretched)

  • Pliers
