Marble fireplace cleaning

Nov 14, 2006 2 Replies

Hi all, hope you can help. Just moved and the living room has a large marble fireplace which is heavily stained with soot, can anyone recommend a cleaning product or made up solution that will clean it safely. The marble seems to be a grey tone with black streaks if that makes any difference.

Soap and water if its just soot, however if its ground in soot/stubborn opt for a propriety brand cleaner for the purpose of cleaning marble as some cleaners can stain the marble or even discolour it. Pop into a gas fire showroom near you sometimes they have a cleaner for sale?

The museum people seem to go for a product called "Vulpex Spirit Soap" you can get this from all sorts of conservators suppliers like

for example.

Might be worth looking throiugh some of the conservation websites, and the National Trust "Housekeeping Manual has a lot of information in it.
