I live in Portugal and I have an old house that have a fireplace that was used in the old days for cooking, warming up the house and also make dried meat. This fireplace is situated in my living room and it takes so much space. I have plans on renovation the entire house but I'm unsure on if it's wise to remove the entire thing or change it somehow. My ongoing plan is to use the chimney of said fireplace to serve as a way of extracting fumes from the kitchen. Because I plan to move my new kitchen to that space. I have a photo of a similar fireplace that was inside the same house that I already completely removed because it was covered on top. And I also have photo of what I want to look like.
