I’ve been plugging away at this massive deck for seven weeks, including the demo of the old one, but it’s been slow going. I’m only getting in maybe one to four hours a day lately becuase life has been hitting hard. I lost my niece to suicide recently and also had to walk away from my girlfriend since her alcohol use became a dealbreaker for me. This project is the biggest one I’ve ever done, stretching across two bungalows that were joined togather, so the sheer scale of it is starting to psych me out. I'm getting ready to install the railing system and I'm worried about the sightlines over such a long distance. If my vertical posts are even a fraction of an inch off, you'll see it from the other end of the house. Is it normal to struggle this much with the precision when you're grieving, or is there a trick to keeping things straight on a double-wide lot? I feel like I'm staring at the wood and the measurements just aren't clicking like they ussually do.

When you're dealing with a span that covers two full building widths, traditional measuring tapes start to fail you becuase of the cumulative error and the physical sag in the tape. The reason your brain isn't clicking is likely a mix of the heavy emotional load and the fact that your eyes are trying to process perspective over a distance that most residential decks never reach. To get those posts perfectly in line, you need to stop relying on individual measurements from the rim joist and switch to a **string line and spacer** method.
Run a high-tension masonry line from one far corner of the deck to the other, but don't set it right against the posts. Offset it exactly two inches out using blocks of scrap wood. This allows you to plumb each post and check its alignment without actualy touching the string, wich prevents the line from getting deflected as you work down the row. If you're even a sixteenth off on one post, the gap between the wood and the string will show it instantly. It's much easier on the brain to visually check a consistent gap than to keep crunching numbers when your focus is shot. Precision work is the first thing to go when you're grieving because it requires a level of executive function that your mind is currently using to process the loss of your niece and the breakup. It's completely normal to feel like you're staring at the grain and seeing nothing. When the math feels too heavy, stick to the mechanical shortcuts like the string line or a long straightedge. It takes the pressure off your internal compass and puts it back on the tools. Don't be afraid to just walk away for the day if the sightlines start blurring. On a project this size, 1-4 hours of high-quality work is better than eight hours of making mistakes that you'll have to unscrew and redo next week. Once those posts are locked in and straight, the rest of the railing system will feel like a downhill slide. Just take it one post at a time and let the string do the thinking for you.
That string line method is the only way to stay sane on a run that long. To make it even easier on yourself, use spring clamps to hold the line against your spacer blocks instead of tying knots. When you’re dealing with heavy grief, your fine motor skills can get a bit shaky, and fighting with a knot that keeps slipping is the last thing you need. Clamps let you tension the line perfectly in two seconds. It keeps the setup mindless so you can just focus on the alignment without the extra mental tax of constant recalibrating.
If your brain is fried from the grief, stop fighting that string line and grab a Bosch GLL3-330CG laser. I had a similar massive wrap-around project after my dad passed, and I couldn't trust my eyes for anything. This laser shoots a bright green plane across the entire span of both bungalows. Instead of measuring off a string that might blow in the wind, you just align your posts to the beam. It takes the guesswork out of the equation so you don't have to overthink the math while you're hurting. It saved my sanity when I couldn't focus on a simple tape measure.
While the aforementioned laser and string methods provide excellent horizontal alignment, you must ensure your posts are perfectly plumb in both axes before fastening, as even a minor tilt becomes an agonizingly obvious geometric error across a double-bungalow span. I find that standard 24-inch levels are insufficient for such critical sightlines; I highly recommed utilizing a dedicated 78-inch door-and-jamb level, wich spans the majority of the post height and minimizes the deviation that occurs when you inadvertently pivot a shorter level over an uneven wood grain surface while your focus is understandably compromised by your current stressors.
I'm so sorry you're going through all that. I'm just starting out with basic repairs and I can't even imagine the scale of a double bungalow. Quick question about that string line idea—if the deck is that long, do you have to worry about the wind moving the string and messing up the alignment? Or is masonry line heavy enough to stay still? I usually just use a tape measure for everything, but the idea of 'cumulative error' makes me nervous about my own small projects now.
So I tried the string line with spring clamps today. It realy helped with the shaky hands, but I’m still worried about the plumb on those corner posts. That point about the geometric error over a double span is haunting me. If I switch to the green laser, will it be bright enugh to see in midday sun, or shold I wait untill dusk to mark everything out?
