My buddy just dropped off a relatively new Kenmore fridge for me, but he had it laying flat on its back in his truck for the whole trip. It wasn't a long drive, maybe twenty minutes or three miles at most, but I've always heard that laying them down is a huge no-no. Some people act like it's a death sentence for the compressor, while others say it doesn't realy matter as long as you don't plug it in right away. I'm feeling a bit paranoid about it now. I’m thinking about letting it sit upright for a few hours before I even think about power, but I'm tempted to just wait til tomorrow morning to be safe. Since I have to wait anyway, I might pull off that bottom panel on the back and give the coils a good vacuuming since it looks pretty dusty back there. Has anyone actualy had one break from this, or is it just one of those old wives' tales that everyone repeats? I'd love to hear if I'm overthinking this or if I shoud be genuinely worried about the coolant lines.

The concern about laying a fridge on its back isn't an old wives' tale, but it's also not an immediate death sentence if you handle the restart correctly. The main risk is that the **compressor oil** migrates out of the pump housing and into the cooling lines. Since it was only on its back for about twenty minutes, you probly didn't have a massive amount of oil travel deep into the evaporator, but it definitely moved out of the reservoir. If you plug it in immediatly, the compressor might try to pump vapor through lines that are partially blocked by liquid oil. This can cause the compressor to slug or, worse, run without proper lubrication for those first few critical minutes. I've seen units where the oil gets stuck in the capillary tube, wich basicly turns the fridge into a giant paperweight because it can no longer circulate refrigerant properly.
Letting it sit upright for 24 hours is the industry standard for a reason, but for a short trip like yours, waiting until tomorrow morning is usually plenty. You want gravity to pull every drop of that oil back down into the crankcase where it belongs. I always tell people to wait a full day just because the cost of being impatient is a massive repair bill or a dead appliance. And you should definitely pull that back panel and vacuum the coils while you wait. Most Kenmore units have a condenser fan back there too, so make sure that isn't gummed up with pet hair or dust. It'll make the fridge run much more efficiently once you do finally kick it on. Just be careful not to kink any of the copper lines while you're cleaning out the debris.
I'm definitely playing it safe and waiting until tomorrow morning then. When I’m back there cleaning, is there a trick to getting the dust out of those tiny fins without bending them? I’ve seen people use compressed air, but I’m worried about blowing gunk further into the motor components.
Also, I noticed a bit of sticky residue on one of the copper joints. Does that mean oil actually leaked out of the sealed system, or is that just some kind of factory sealant? I relly don't want to fire it up if it's already compromised.
That sticky residue on the copper joint is likely just leftover flux from the factory welds. Unless you see a fresh puddle of oil, it’s probly fine. As for cleaning those fins, skip the compressed air—you’ll just blow dust into places you can’t reach.
Grab a cheap, soft-bristled paintbrush. Gently brush the dust loose while holding your vacuum nozzle right against it to suck up the debris as it falls. It’s way safer than using a high-pressure blast and you won't risk bending the aluminum. If you do accidentally flatten a few, don't panic; it won't kill the efficiency unless you flatten a whole section. Just take it slow and you'll be golden.
One thing people forget when a fridge has been on its back is checking the drip pan. If there was any old water in there, it might have spilled into the bottom casing or near the wiring when it was tilted. Since you have the panel off, just give it a quick wipe so it doesn't start smelling funky later. Also, check that the door still closes flush. Sometimes the weight resting on its back can slightly tweak the hinges. If you feel a draft around the seal once it's upright, you might just need to loosen the bolts and realign it.
