Log Carving?

My neighbor, Dave the bowl turner gave me a 12" long piece of Ginko log. It's about 9" in diameter, cut in half lengthwise, bark still on. He knows I'm just getting into carving.

I'd like to carve a face coming out of the bark. I've seen some in some past mags, but can't remember enough about it to search effectively.

Can someone point me to books or what it is called? I'm thinking in particular of faces of a mountain man or mythical creatures like gnomes or the like.

Yeah, I've seen something like it on the shelf in tall paperback, but can't think of it at the moment.

Working along the search for gnomes or garden spirits (sprites) should bring paydirt.

Been to rec.crafts.carving?
