Wall tiles

We are replacing our kitchen and want to tile the walls in 100mm square tiles in bright 'primary' colours in a random pattern.

We have not been able to find a range of tiles that has more than a 3 bright colours and to make the random pattern we need at least 5. Does anyone know of a range of tiles that have at least 5 bright colours?

Another idea that we had is to get white tiles and paint and fire them. Does anyone know if this is possible and if so, how hardwearing would the finish be and where could we get the paint and glaze?

This is one of those old maths problems. How many colours do you need for a map so you never get the same colour across country boundaries. I thought that the answer was four. Perhaps not. Anyway my local tile merchant has at least two ranges with multiple colours. These are thick 4" continental-style tiles. Is that what you had in mind? So try a dealer that the pros go to.

As for diy. Unless things have changed I don't think that this is possible. You need a proper clay kiln to get the right temperatures to make a hardwearing glaze. I knew some people in Harlow who did when I lived there. Long time ago so I can't remember the name. They've probably moved on. However if you're near it might be worth trying Parndon Mill or Burnt Mill.
