I can thoroughly recommend NavFree on Andriod. I haven't used it on Iphone but it seems that they do a version for the i Platform

On the journey in question you might know the prime route in your head, it will be signposted and you have no intention of using the sat nav on your phone, but the alternative is not adequately signposted, nor is there any data coverage at the point at which you have to take the alternative nor at any point along the roue. There may not even be any reliable voice coverage at all let alone any usable data functionality.

But only if you pre-cache them before you travel, you cannot pre-cache them part way on your journey when there is ZERO data coverage
