Toilet seat dimensions

The things you never notice til they need replacing:

I am going to replace the toilet seat and lid, looking on ebay at soft close and their dimensions how the heck do you measure it as nothing is an exact fit to the size of the bowl. I then start looking at what is already installed in the 2 toilets and in both the seats overhangs slightly, is this normal? both at the sides and at the front. Should it be exact or should there be an overhang?

In one toilet it is all matching so I assume it came as a package together, the other I think was cobbled together.

Is it an exact science or just get the best fit?

Checking them out in the sheds I noticed that the actual ring the bit you sit on can vary a bit in width as well. This is what made me decide to measure up first as much as anything else. It was necessary to get them out of the box - well the one I finally bought anyway - as you can never be sure that the ones on display always match the ones in the boxes beneath. Regardless of what's printed on the display.

As to the other point about the holes matching up from memory at least, although this is probably standard ISTR rather than holes in the seat there were slots allowing a bit of leeway. Although I'm not inclined to dismantle anything simply to prove myself wrong
