New Build Planning

Bit of a random question this one but im sure someone on here may be able to help. I am currently looking into the idea of designing and building my own house. Now I am a complete novice with this type of thing and I am trying to get a little bit of info on what rules and regulations there are for new build planning. I can only imagine how much many avenues I am going to have to go down, but any helpful hints or information would be greatly appreciated. Plus it will get the other half off my back!

Not the d-i-y answer you want, maybe, but your best answer would be to draw a rough sketch of what you want, then take it to an architect, and I'd also ask the architect to manage the project. It'll pay you back in saved time and grief.

If you use something like Sweethome 3D, which is free for Windows to make a rough 3D representation, that makes it easier for you to visualise what's possible and what's not.

As to the rules governing new build, start with the Building Regulations, then check your local planning rules, taking into consideration what's next door and what you want to build. The website you point to is a reasonable start.

Ummm - was I wrong to dismiss the OP as merely trying to get a site further up the pecking order in search engines? After all, why would the OP ask for advice if s/he already knows about a site which offers "a completely cost free question & answer service that will guide you through the construction maze"? Or is it that it doesn't deliver on those claims? In other words, that s/he found

The main feature of the site is a picture of a house, and if you click, it gives a one paragraph summary that says nothing useful. Worth what they charge, I reckon.

ICBA digging any further, as I have been on payafortune 3G all day. The OP may, of course, have been fishing for opinions about the site, but as he hasn't replied, and it looks like a throwaway e-mail addres, I fear you may be right.
