Loft conversion to give double-height living space

I find it hard to share the attitude that regards a house as primarily a financial asset. I've no intention of selling but if circumstances ever force me to do so, I'll take the consequences then. Money spent in making my home the way I want it to be is not going to be money lost.

From any point on the upper floor, do you mean? Interesting requirement. My possible plan does meet that.

I don't understand what that means, I'm afraid.

Or that. I'll see if I can find the relevant regs. Thanks for your reply.

I find it amusing to see that after building a fugly hobbit hole Harry is whining that bizarre houses "loose" (sic) money.

The foot of the stair should be within 3m of the door from the room containing the gallery.

Oops. Should have read, "any cooking facilities should be remote from the stair...".

Approved Document B, Vol 1 (s 2.12).

Thanks for the explanation.

Ah, I see. In my case, most of the ground floor is one open-plan space, so "the door from the room" is presumably the front door of the bungalow, which is considerably more than 3m from the floor of the staircase. Does that knock the entire plan on the head? There is an exit point (a large picture window with access-sized opening) well within 3m and another (patio door) at almost exactly 3m, however.

OK, thanks. The kitchen area is some 9m from the foot of the stairs, though there are no intervening walls or doors.

I'll take a look. Thanks again.
