IKEA mattresses and non-IKEA bedframes

Hello,

Sorry for the following newbie, non-DIY question:

We have recently bought a double bed frame from a local company, and they claimed it was a "standard size" double bed. They don't sell mattresses, however.

We are now thinking of buying a spring mattress from IKEA, and they claim that the 140cm x 200cm mattress fits a double bed.

However a friend of mine has warned that IKEA items have proprietary sizes, and might not be a perfect fit. Having done the conversions, it would seem that 'standard size' mattresses are roughly 137cm x 195cm.

Is it OK to get an IKEA mattress to fit a non-IKEA bedframe?

Many thanks in advance, Ruli

Been there done that... In one of my student houses it had Ikea bed bases, supplied by the landlord, but UK matresses and matresses were 10cm short. Ended up having to stuff a pillow in the gap.

I think the Ikea stuff is European size and is 10cm longer than UK size. Also I got a cheap (ex -shop, £20) childrens bed, Swedish make, and was

200cm long, but without going to Ikea the only matresses we could find locally were all 190cm long. I took bed apart and chopped off 10cm and bought a cheap matress locally.

Can't you find another local independent supplier for the mattress?

IKEA tend to use European standard sizes, which are a bit more generous than British sizes.

Probably not if you want a good fit - I suggest it depends to some extent on the style of the frame.

The Ikea mattresses are longer than our UK bedframes. We took the gamble with my son's single pine bed, and just managed to squeeze the mattress in. I have to say it is very snug, but that is an improvement on the mattress he had originally, and the sheets stay on now!
