I fitted a new ceiling - not my best job -suggestions?

The kitchen is an outrigger. It has a sloping roof, and a sloping ceiling on the same timbers with a 3" gap. So it was very cold. I took down the plasterboard, filled with standard insulation wool, screwed 2" polysterine foam board to the rafters, and finished with plasterboard, using 2.5" screws. The improvement in temperature is dramatic.

But the new ceiling, though solid, is uneven by nearly half an inch.

What;s the best/easiest way to make it level before skimming? I don't fancy taking the plasterboard down again. I think I could either

  1. Build it up with bonding plaster. It'd be quite heavy hanging on the plasterboard. or
  2. fit sections of additional plasterboard where the space allows, and then level it with bonding plaster.

Would it be strong enough? What do you think?

I'm no expert i'm afraid, but do you mean regular polystyrene - the sort that gives off noxious gasses when burned / melted ?

I'd be tempted to suggest taking it back down, fit batons (level the ceiling at this point), fit something like kingspan in the new gap, then re-plate the ceiling to the now-correct levels.

Are you meaning that you've put insulation between the rafters right up against the roof ?? If so then you are in for a spot of bother

You need to leave a 50mm gap between the insulation and the roof otherwise you are going to eventually get into some trouble with condensation.

Indeed. Surely it would be less work to reposition the PB than to bugger about trying to level it?
