How much to have a gas meter put back in?

I know moving meters is expensive - 300+ Is that about how much it costs for them to put a new meter in? (The meter has been removed in a property I've looked at - along with the boiler and rads!)

I don't think it costs very much to actually have the meter put back if you are not making any changes to the pipework. In my current house, I had to have the meter reconnected when I moved in, by a certificated plumber. I think he charged me £50. In this case the meter was actually lying by the service head and was a completely new one. You would need somebody to supply you with meter first. Nobody actually knew that I had reconnected the meter (which was not my intention) and I finally got in touch with a gas supplier this year (after receiving free gas for at least 2 years!!) because I thought I better had! main, a new meter should be free. When we've had new supplies installed, the pipework network installs the connection, then you connect a gas supplier to install the meter. The first part is the chargeable bit.

If you're considering buyong this proerty, and it sounds like you are, you should definitely establish that the meter was officially removed by a gas co., not just chopped off and the supply capped by some cowboy. I assume you didn't smell gas as you looked around!

Your conveyancer ought to be able to do this, and you'd end up with the necessary references for getting it reconnected.
