Hole in the wall electric fires

Hi all. Are leccy fires still a lot more expensive way to warm a room than gas fires ?

Thanks.

Not necessarily. We had a gas fire, ripped it out and blocked up the chimney, the room gets warmer quicker and the bills seem no different. I suppose if we hadn't blocked off the chimney it would be higher.

Might depend on whether the gas fire uses a conventional chimney or is 'room sealed'. We have a balanced flue room sealed gas fire which seema to be quite good at warming the room. BTW we went for gas so that we have a way of heating one room wirhout relying on electricity (no elec, no CH)

2-3x as expensive per kW to run. You're paying for the generating plants as well as the fuel, and all the human time that goes into that.

Leccy is about 3 times the price of gas per unit BUT electric fires are

100% efficient in terms of useful heat into the room. Gas fires vary from maybe 50-80% and if you have an open flued (conventional) fire then not only does half the fire's heat go up the chimney but you also have a draught through the room.

So there might not be much difference between electric and gas especially if with electric you can close off the draughty flue.
