Garden wall smartening tip

For the past 6 years I've been looking at my very grotty front garden wall and wondering what to do about it. Seems that it was built 30 years and has never been touched. I've seen them painted; it just does not seem to work very well.

Use a wire brush, then 500g of caustic soda in 6ltrs of cold water. Apply to the wall with a hand brush. Wear gloves and don't get this stuff on your skin or in the eyes. Wait for about one hour, then jet wash off.

I used masking tape around the joints on the top stones, then a narrow trowel for the sand and cement.

It's the best part of a days work but worth it.

Just use a power washer. An hour and job done. Spray a bit of bleach on to retard future algy growth.

The bloke up the road tried that with the same sort of wall. It did not make a scrap of difference. I'll try the bleach trick, thanks for that one.

It will still come back eventually. Takes a bit longer that's all. The bleach kills the spores.

A bottle of bleach only costs a quid. I'll give it a squirt every time I mow the lawn.

Maybe we should be putting a few copper filaments into the mortar mix?

Well keep it off your plants/grass.

If Mr Pounder squirted bleach after each mow, would't the bleach bleed into the soil after it's rained?

Google suggests that weak bleach and a quick wash off with water will not do much if any harm to grass. There is no immediate grass on my side of the wall, just two indestructible bush things and wood chipping.

Looks like it would be right at home in suburban Surrey.
