In connecting the 10mm speedfit to the TRV,I am pushing the pipe into the ferule with pipe support and it is a close fit..there seems to be no way to use a brass olive so the speedfit pipe is not locked into the valve. The nut to lock the pipe in place has a top hole about 13mm diameter so couldn't squeeze an olive.
Am I doing something wrong?
PS. By ferule..I mean the collet type thing of which there are 2, 8mm and 10mm.
You do not need an olive with this TRV-just use the 'ferrule' as you call it.Having said that I would not take speedfit pipe to the TRV.I would use 10mm copper instead as the 'ferrule' needs quite a bit of tightening -you tighten the compression nut at the bottom of the valve and after half a turn from handtight the 'ferrule' will make a positive click( it gives way like you have snapped it) then just tighten some more like you would a normal olive.Plastic pipe to compression fittings is okay usually and you are doing the right thing in using a pipe support sleeve but it will be a stronger joint in copper.Let us know how you get on.

I would not recommend the idea of trying to re-use the brass 'ferrule'.Having said that,if you are tightening it onto plastic pipe you may have a chance of getting it off again but as I say not recommended.Remember though these are reliable fittings and so long as you correctly insert an undamaged piece of pipe into the valve(preferably copper pipe)and tighten sufficiently past the 'click' you will not have any problems.
