Chimney Cowl Question

Had something like this

a couple of years back, and a builder (who was up pointing the chimney) pointed out that the bird mesh should have been removed as it is above a solid fuel (coal & wood) fire.

I can see why the mesh must be fitted for oil & gas flues, but I can't think why it MUST be removed for solid fuel.

I would have thought the smoke would have fitted through the holes without any problem, and it would be good not to have birds falling down or getting in to build nests.

Does anyone know why it says to remove them.

I'm no expert but it could be due to potential blocking from a build- up of soot/tar.

Perhaps a cowl with a bigger mesh would be allowed.

Hi

There are some Cowl's on the market that are designed to be used with thatched roofs called Spark Arrestors these have a very fine mesh and are used with solid fuel stoves to reduce the risk of igniting the thatch. However these cowl's have a very small mesh and need to be cleaned carefully every year to prevent them being blocked with soot and tar.

However the larger mesh cowl's which are designed to prevent problems with birds are no problem.

As you have the web site, which has a 'contact us' page, why not ask the manufacturer? You will get a definitive answer, rather than a series of guesses, then you can tell us.

Generally find I get more sense here rather than from manufacturers/ suppliers, but i'll give it a go.

Ok, just picked up the mail, and the answer is.......

"The mesh should always be removed for Solid Fuel use due to the getting blocked."

Well, mines not in the least blocked after about 4 years use, so I think my on the (rather high) spot descision to leave them in place was prolly the right one.
