AV cable choice

Reconfiguring Home cinema setup - was previously all analogue component video, and TOSLink audio, with SCART for PVR & DVDR

While TV and PVR will now be changing to HDMI ... DVDR will remain SCART (no better option) ...

I have 2 good quality SCART cables ... Fisual Super Pearl Ingot Flat cable and QED SQART dual screen silver reference cable

Anybody know which is the better ?, I know neither were cheap .. but can't remember which is the better cable ... might as well use the best one.

They both seem to mention gold plated pins, oxygen free copper and double screening. I wouldn't take any chances, chuck them both out and get a Tesco Value SCART instead.

If you can't tell the difference between them either will do.

FWIW, it would take skill to make a cable so bad it made a difference over such a short run. If you think of the many many miles analogue video was sent over to get to the transmitter at one time.

there are plenty of cr'p scart leads about. It seems popular not to use screened cables for the video and/or audio giving cross talk sometimes. However there were fully screened scart cables available for ~£1.99 that worked fine. they even had proper tin lead connectors that didn't suffer from the contact degradation you get when using gold flashed connectors mixed with tin/lead connectors.

And if he can use the one that looks "better".

Or just corner cutting like not using coax for the video signals.

Over fairly chunky coax with some nifty equalisation applied as well.

Can you buy a 'branded' make like that? The only time I've seen them is in the freebie provided with cheap equipment. But have found they can work ok too.

The one that has the prettiest colours, thickest insulation and most macho sounding name,

The 'Fisual super pearl ingot' sounds like an entry in viz's profanisaurus for a super turd that wont flush.

Plug them in, watch and listen and make your choice. That's why Hi-Fi shops have listening rooms - what I like the look and sound of will not be the same as you, and neither of us is wrong (or right!).

I sat in a listening room at Audio Excellence where the guy was demonstrating some extortionately priced LINN speaker cable - he was absolutely convinced that when you reversed the cable you could tell the difference.

I sure as hell couldn't.

I just thought I would check here in case someone knew which was the better.

Both bs over quality, if you want genuine quality, bin them. But its not likely you'd notice any difference.

There is no need to spend more than £5 on a SCART cable, perhaps a little more for a 2 or 3 metre one, I think you paid considerably more than that.

Oxygen free is just snake oil, Gold plated contacts might be slightly beneficial apart from one small detail; the contacts in your SCART sockets are highly unlikely to be gold plated and it's the gold on gold that reduces the contact resistance, the steel spring contact will just carve a furrow in the gold plated blade pin.

All you need to avoid is those very cheap thin cables, as they don't have individually screened signal leads. That is essential.

The flat ribbon ones are also good, and their weight distribution is better particularly on horizontally orientated sockets.

That's because there wasn't any.

But I read in a hifi magazine that using a gold-plated mains plug improved stereo separation.

It's even better if you use such 2 plugs on different phases, 1 for each channel.

I'll run one from next door, then.

Gold plating tends to improve separation between cash and your bank account and that is about all.

Use the one with the highest bullshit factor.

So I guess you guys don't hold with the "What HiFi tests" etc. and see no difference in interconnects ? :-)

Oh, there is a difference. But the elbow on the curve where spending more money gets no detectable difference is at about £5.
