The Ikea ones use something like a 1/4" steel plate maybe 2" high screwed to the wall with a number of circa 1" diameter steel tubes welded perpendicularly to them. They aren't rods - they are definitely hollow.

this one I think, If in Ikea, try pulling one off the wall. They slise out leaving a pair of round bars protudinf from the wall.

Compared to drilling the wall and banging in steel rods some people might see Ikea's "drilling a few 6mm holes plugging and screwing" as a much better solution.
Did Conran ever sell his design in tatihab? If he did I bet it didn't retail for less than 12 quid even in the 70's
Like I say, YMMV. Conran's shelves are much sturdier, but I agree that they're also much more work.
I personally wouldn't put books on Ikea's offering, and books are what the OP needs to store.
