Acrylic sheet

I am about to order a sheet of 1500mm x 500mm (opal) perspex. It will be in a position avove head height when installed. I don't wether to buy 3mm or 5mm thickness...is 3mm very fragile?

Thanls.

I would have thought 3mm would be fine...BUT...if it isn't supported, might sag. 5mm is more rigid, naturally.

As an aside, avoid theplasticshop.co.uk. I bought a piece from them last week. Strange...two days after I ordered, I received an email saying it was on its way. It contained strict instructions about delivery; I was to open and check the parcel contents before signing for it; if the driver wouldn't wait, I was to sign 'Damaged'. Otherwise they wouldn't entertain any claims at all.

Shortly after the email, I had a phone call from them: "Standard practice to phone you in case you didn't get the email",. said the woman. Same instructions: sign "Damaged" if not inspected.

Think I'll avoid them in the future.

Why? Most delivery companies won't accept a claim if you wrote "not opened" or "not inspected" on the note. Of course the drivers don't want to wait while every parcel is opened and inspected... Getting you to write "damaged" on the note seems a logical work around of the delivery companies rules.

I don't think that's (necessarily) fair. They may be a small shop, and they probably don't deliver themselves. If the couriers screw up (which happens from time to time - even with the best), they want to be able to claim off the couriers. They have probably been bitten before, and want to make it easy to claim back.

I don't think it means they use particularly unreliable couriers.

They're asking me to lie. I have no problem with writing "Unexamined", but "Damaged"?

Well if it turns out to be damaged it's damaged and you have marked it so .If It is not damaged then forget it ..No harm ( or damage) done :-)

Most courier/delivery companies are complete s**te IME. I always sign 'U/X' for unexamined, but I'm pretty sure they would try to wriggle out of any claim any way they could.

Seems to me that theplasticshop.co.uk are trying to protect themselves and their customers from s**te delivery companies who are simply unable to deliver fragile goods without breaking them.

BTDTGTTS.

Id go to a local sign manufacturer. They will undoubtedly have opal in both thicknesses and possibly let you handle it to satisfy yourself which to go for.
