12v MR16 waxing bright and dim

A while ago I replaced a 12v MR16 lamp that was cycling bright and dim every few minutes. One of the contacts did seem to have deteriorated, but there did not seem to be anything wrong with the lampholder. Now I notice the replacement lamp is exhibiting the same symptoms. Generally these lamps seem to last very well, and in the 12 other similar units we have there is no problem. Is this bright and dim cycling a symptom of a transformer beginning to fail?

(I know that one must not overload the transformers, as the ones we had fitted in the kitchen, were designed to be 20W - unbeknown to us - and when we put a 30W lamp in with them this did start the whole array turning off and then back on again every few minutes. The one that is currently affected however is in the bathroom where transformers that would take 50W were used, and we generally use 30W lamps.)

Cheers,

Sonds like trafo failing, bad lampholder is more likely to be flicker, but you mention lampholder dont look so good either so replace that as well, which think is actually a GX 5.3.....
