Vented Gas Logs...

First, thanks to all who answered my inquiry about ventless gas logs. After reviewing some articles and speaking with plumbers who also do gas work, I've decided to go with the Vented Gas Logs. So, here are my questions:

  1. The vented log will be in my current wood fireplace. I assume since the chimney vented burning wood, it also can vent the vented logs. Correct?

  1. How much heat do the vented logs put out? I'd assume that alot of the heat goes up the chimney. So are these logs more decorative than heat generating?

  2. We are having a guy come out to estimate what it would cost to run a gas line from the basement to the fireplace. Luckily the line would not need to be tapped since it has a "valve" that can be tapped and opened. Plus that tap is directly under the fireplace. I know the proce differs from state to state due to regulation, but any idea of how much it will be to run a 10' gal line from the tap to the fireplace? Since it looks "easy" I'd do it myself, but I don't trust myself and would probably blow my house up.

Thanks in advance!!

"Valves" cannot be tapped unless it feeds to a stub that is capped. To tee off to a fireplace will require a disconnection at the last "union" on the line and unscrewing the pipes, fittings and valves to get back to where you want the fireplace line connected, where a tee will be installed with its own valve to shut off the fireplace. Copper lines are cut, flared and a tee installed.

See...that's why I don't even attempt such things!

So how much do you think this will cost me? A ballpark. Am I looking at $1,000, $500, $100?? Thanks!

Yup

Yup...more decorative. I have both types and the vented is alot better looking. You can add the fibers that look like ambers....really nice

Better to pay someone to do this. I had about a 40 foot run and it cost around $300

Depends on where in the world you are. I had about 35 feet of line installed for a cook top, it cost about $240.00, this is in a large metropolitan center in Canada. Can't say for your area.
