Replacement Window Cost

I am looking into replacement windows for my house, and want to get an idea of how much I will need to spend.

I know window costs vary by make, size and area of the country. Is there a web site somewhere were I could get a ball pack estimate?

Ball Park - $300.00 per window. Which is a useless number since there are too many variables to even get close. Why not just call a local company and get a free estimate?

$580 P&L for a good window, in the upto 110" height + width size range.

As another poster suggested, call around for several free estimates. (And the most expensive won't necessarily be the best!) We had ours done several years ago -- think it was $225 per opening, meaning we "made out like a bandit" with the two picture windows and "got cheated" on the small bathroom window.

Things to consider: - Insulation. Two pane, argon (or some inert gas) filled. There is also am "e-layer" option which reflects most of the ultraviolet rays. Does give the windows a slight black tint. - Inserts. We had the 'window pane' inserts added (small charge). Makes the one big window look like six or eight smaller panes. If you're not sure if you want six or eight take a piece of «" masking tape and do a layout on your present window to see what looks good. (We've got wider windows and went with the eight.) - Ease of cleaning. Ours have a release so will swing to the inside. - Repair of damaged framework and added insulation. We had some structural damage from a leaky window which they fixed at no additional cost.

Don't assume anything. Ask questions and get in writing. They should do all the removal and cleanup. Prep the area before they arrive: move stuff from the window area. They do most of the installation from the outside but do have to do some inside work. If there is an unmoveable piece of furniture put a thick towel over it. Take pictures, etc., off the walls: they will be pounding.

Be prepared for how quiet things will be with your new windows! It's amazing how much noise infiltrated through the old windows!

I just put 38 new windows in my house using a local supplier and a contractor I know very well. The total cost for the windows and installation was around $375 per for a nice window.

Be cautious of Pella - I have spoken to a lot of people who paid for the Pella name and were very disappointed. While it arguable that the problem was the isntaller and not the window, I have heard too many comments to feel that was the case throughout. IMO, they simply aren't worth the premium. Also, buy at least a mid-range quality window and get a good installer and warranty. The really cheap ones that you get flyers about in the the sunday paper are generally crap.
