Issues with a Trane TDE100A

My Trane TDE100A9455M2 is flaking out on me. Symptom is that the igniter goes out just a moment before the gas valve opens and fails to ignite. Typically, it ends up cycling until the IFC locks it out and decides to blow cold air around the house.

The company that installed the unit for the previous owner of the home came out and told me the IFC was broken and quoted something like $500 to replace it. "Shenanigans," said I and tried to track down what the IFC really costs. It's a White Rogers 50A55-476, which according to google doesn't exist and it doesn't show up in the white rogers online catalog and trane doesn't seem to have an online parts list either.

So, I finally gave up and got a 50A55-843 off ebay NIB for cheap. When it's installed it powers up, then turns on the blower and reports that the flame sensor has detected flame when non called for. Presumably, while otherwise compatible, the flame sensor installed doesn't work with the 50A55-843.

Should I track down an alternate flame sensor that should work the

50A55-843 or try to track down a 50A55-476? Or am I going in the wrong direction entirely?

TIA.

keep buying those non-returnable, electrical parts... eventually you will get the right thing..... and how much time and money will you hav wasted?? Those boards are not free...... how much more will you have to waste before you could have paid the tech, and now you'd have heat.

Gee. That's helpful. I certainly don't mean to be a jerk or anything but it's not rocket science to replace a control board I didn't feel like it was worth paying someone else to do it. I paid them to diagnose it but didn't like what they wanted to charge - I was fine with the labor. It was paying $300 for an IFC that got me, especially after digging around to find out what they seem to list for.

SO, does any HVAC tech in here actually care to offer me any suggestions besides telling me I should have just shut up and paid the contractor?

Sounds like you may need to find a flame sensor that's compatable with the -843 WR controller.

I would go "digging around" for to find you the part## except that I happen to have more important ( and profitable ) things to do at the moment.

Bud, You're barking in the wrong dog park. You want guys that do this work for a living to peer through their screen and tell you whats wrong with what they cant see. Then you want us to shit all over the tech that came out because YOU think he diagnosed it wrong. How much time, money and comfort have you lost now due to being such a tightass? You would have been ahead in the long run if you would have just gone ahead and had the repair done..............THEN, if the tech put the board on and it didnt work, it would have been HIS problem. NOT yours. Take you lumps skin flint. Keep tossing parts at it or call someone that knows how to do it right. OH yeah, dont forget to replace your thermostat. Its almost always the thermostat. Bubba

Not much really. $50 for the IFC, an hour or two of screwing around with the furnace. What, it was time that would have been wasted watching TV anyway.. The only thing I regret about trying to fix it myself is posting in alt.hvac -- silly me. That was a waste of time. And then letting a bunch of trolls get the better of me. Wow.

Anyway, after a second pass it was obvious that the flaky IFC wasn't pin compatible with the replacement and wiring schematics on the furnace don't match the flaky one either I decided that you know, those jerks are right, it's not worth my time to figure it out and convince myself all of the safety interlocks work right.

I called a contractor who's writing a bid on a custom built 200 ton CRAC install for me. He offered to send a guy out tonight for it but I told him just to put it through dispatch. What, it was 72 today?

Hope you enjoy freezing your ass of fixing oil burners. Glad I have a desk job.
