how often should swimming pool water be replaced?

The installer of our in ground pool suggested every 3 - 5 years as the free chlorine ... Yada , yada . Is this true ? wouldn't the periodic adding of water due to evaporation help balance that out ?

Yeah, that's pretty accurate for an automatic sweeper setup, they get the big heavy stuff but don't scrub or remove oxidation nor the chlorine that's now salt. If you manually vacuum and regularly brush you can get 10-years quite easily. But, then the life of the paint dictates the full draining and re-filling interval. No, adding 1% (if that) of new water doesn't do much of anything, except keep the pump happy.
