I got a call on Saturday night from our grandson saying that he and his mother could no longer open the doors to both her bedroom and the spare bedroom where the computer hardware (router etc.) runs. Both the door handles refused to open the latches. I went (20 miles round trip) to take a look and sure enough from the landing, neither door would open and on the spare-room door the handle actually fully rotated but the door refused to open.. Taking off the handles it seemed that the mechanism had broken up.. My son had previously had a similar problem with the kitchen door about a year previously and complained to the fitter and he had replaced that lock mechanism with a Legge version.. Now six months later it appeared that two more locks of the 'York' had failed in the same way.. These are all very simple mortice latches and were all fitted in Dec 2006 when the bathroom and kitchens were remodelled and all the room doors replaced. I removed the wood strip to get at the latch and levered it back with a knife to get in the rooms, gain access to the mechanism and removed the latches.. One came apart in my hand as I removed it and the other stayed intact but turning the handle fails to withdraw the latch.. I looked at all the other doors and found that on both the bathroom and the cloakroom although the privacy bolts worked OK the latching features did not. On the other two doors one worked OK but both occasionally nipped the faceplace indicating some wear on the withdrawal mechanism. I decided to replace all the York locks before someone found themselves trapped in other rooms. So today I replaced 4 mortice latches and two bathroom mortice latches with their Legge equivalents. The 'York' versions just have "York" in and ellipse embossed on the faceplate.. Apparently they have no guarantee and were sold in bulk to fitters at less than a £2 whereas the Legge ones £3 plus have "guaranteed for life (whose?)" on all the bubble packaging. Perhaps we just had a bad batch but for all seven to fail in some way in 18 months is just a warning to those with doors that have this make of fitting. If they appear worn replace them before someone gets locked in or out. Michael
