Why do circuit breakers go up for on and down for off?

Reminds me when I lost the diamond "needle" or pickup point of the record player in the cabin of a cinema theatre. I was going to examine it, and if fell to the floor. Gosh. I needed it to buy a new one.

I bent down and slowly examined the tiles and the cracks one by one, methodically. I found it. :-D

The thing was not mine, I was crestfallen to have lost it, so I still remember the incident.

Many people have difficulty with that control. And the person that taught them to drive did not told them how to remember it, either.

I had an Opel Corsa with a similar design. Traditional stick, but with no mechanical latch. Electronic logic. But it could be moved soft or hard. Moving soft it did not latch. Move soft and release, blinked three times.

But the next Corsa has a traditional mechanical switch again.

You do not get electricity.

I always wondered how those things could happen, I thought it was an urban legend. Of course, with transistor amplifiers like I built the chasis was ground, never "neutral".

Which is why repair shops were supposed to use isolation transformers.

I never use the keypad--not because I'm left-handed (which I am)--but because years ago I did data entry on a mainframe computer terminal that didn't have a numeric keypad. My touch-typing of the top-row numbers is effortless. I'm also well practiced at the location of the symbols because I'm a retired computer programmer.

I use the mouse right-handed because my first experience at using a mouse was at other people's desks and I was reluctant to move stuff around on someone else's turf. I'm pretty ambidextrous at most tasks, except for writing.

And sports cars with knock off hubs and wire wheels where a left hand thread is used on one side (forget which) so it doesn't some undone if the cap (or whatever) rubs against something.

And the pressure reducers used on LPG cylinders: propane is the opposite way to butane so you can't connect the wrong one.

I thought it might be useful to use the mouse with my left hand, leaving my right hand for typing, but gave up after a time.

Many, many radios had their chassis at neutral potential. They would generally have isolating cabinets and Bakelite knobs.

I also recall a radio with a dropper resistance wire in the mains lead. The unit was probably of a US origin given the wire colours, and it was an easy matter, through confusion, to swap live and neutral. Don't ask me how I know! That was probably my closest near death experience, and it was with 240V.

I'm unsure that is, or was, the case in Spain, because the plugs/sockets do not differentiate between live and neutral here. You can connect the plugs in any direction.

Would the radio get more noise if the live is connected to the chasis?

I would not put up with any false trips at all.

Not me, I have fuses. They blow if a wire exceeds it's capabilities. There's no other reason to stop power.

But you have 240V in the US too. And actually it's not nastier, as it makes you jump more. Apparently you're likely to stay touching the 120 for longer.

Exceedingly unlikely something would fall and the switch was off and you didn't want it turned on, all at the same time.

A light turning on is not the end of the world.

probably. Its is also potentially lethal. My very first shock was a tingle from a two wire valve radio when my finger contacted a grub screw in the bakelite knob...

(My second was breaking a stalled Meccano motor connection to a 12v toy train transformer. Took about another 5 years of physics till I understood how you get a massive shock off 12V.)

That was so the radio could work on 100V (or so) mains. Not necessarily US origin; we used to have 100V - 250V mains, DC or AC, before it was all standardised to 240V AC, 50 Hz.

I used to have a valve portable radio designed to be used on 100-250V, AC or DC, and also battery. It had extra valves that were only used when it was on the mains. The voltage dropping lead had failed and been replaced with a dropper in the cabinet.

*Much* more recently 120V hair straighteners were imported from the US and supplied to girls with voltage dropping leads. If the lead was coiled up, it overheated.

Why wouldn't they run off the mains?

And why don't they have a voice activation like Alexa?

I have auto lights (they save a lot of time putting things down and picking them up again), but I don't understand the rest. I don't close my curtains, I don't see the point. A fridge needs no control, it just runs. The house thermostat usually stays the same, on the odd occasion I want to change the temperature, I press a button. Fake fireplaces look fake. And how do you "control" an outlet?

It's a realistic expectation.

No, I had pulled into a slower lane so it didn't look to the cop like I was speeding. Since it was a possible camera only (mobile trap out of sight) I didn't warn him. You'd think a BMW owner would have a satnav.
