Watching Freeview TV

Durris doesn't require wideband, you might have had a wideband (or two aerials combined) if you previously got Channel5?

If you have then it should still work, though a group A might be better if signal is marginal, and is certainly all that is required for Durris.

Not bad. I'm the PO in Ballater :-)

I know this is a hopeless answer, but I don't think we ever watched C5 on analogue.

That changes things, there's lots of scenery in the way to Durris.

You're likely be using a group C/D aerial on the relay at Tullich, are the elements on your existing aerial vertical, pointing NE?

However as Tullich is a relay rather than a main transmitter, you'll only get 2 normal muxes, none of the commercial muxes, and the HD mux would be available of you had a HD ready tv and bought a HD box.

So you'll get all the BBC channels, many of the ITV/C4/C5 ones and a few others

You won't get any of the "dross" channels on COM4/COM5/COM6 shown here, doesn't sound like that'll bother you much :-O

and put your postcode into the "Site settings" box near the top right. It will give you an interactive map showing transmitters in your area. Click on the relevant one and it will show the area covered by it. If you have a choice of transmitters and aren't sure which one then compare them with the direction your aerial is pointing.

When you've established the appropriate transmitter look in the "Site settings" panel which now shows a list of transmitters and click on your transmitter. You can now scroll down the page to see a list of all the available channels and which bands your transmitter uses for them. It shows the old analogue channels as well so it will be quite obvious if the digital ones us a a different group

Most aerials have a colour coded plastic plug in the end of the boom to show which frequency group they are for, but it might have got bleached after being up on the roof for many years.

I see from another post you're 40 miles west of Aberdeen which must put you somewhere in the hills near Ballater where reception could be patchy but the website should give you a choice of transmitters to look up.

Incidentally , have you checked if you qualify for free conversion of one TV - age and benefits dependent.

Didn't that 'free' attention actually cost £40?

It does. Or more if you choose a deluxe option. My 90 year old MIL got it, and it was quite a bargain - set top box, new antenna, cabling, setup...

We just got the leaflet ourselves as our changeover is next June. There's nothing in there about age or benefits - it's £40 for everyone. Those registered blind or partially sighted can get a talking proramme guide version for the same price.

Don't bother, their maps are utter s**te, like a lot else on that site.

Thers merit in that decisions..

I must say I am addicted to 5/5usa as total escapist crap to relax to with zero intellectual content whatsoever, but not so gratuitously revolting as corrie et al.

From Digital UK "Some eligible people who take up the Help Scheme will pay £40 for the standard offer of help. For those eligible homes who also receive income-related benefits, the Help Scheme standard offer is free"

Yes. TBH, the aerial looks exactly the same to my eyes as millions of others that started appearing after the launch of BBC2 :-)

Sounds perfect.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, particularly Andy and Ian. Since last weekend, I have taken the plunge and ordered a Goodmans box via eBay. With a little luck, it may appear tomorrow, giving me a little time to play over the weekend. I'll report back ...

I did actually watch a little live TV a few days ago! Son [1] was watching MU getting thrashed, and I couldn't resist joining him for a while.

[1] Son has a flat screen TV with Sky box. It is only his poor parents who still have a CRT set, without an aerial :-)
