TV choices

Do TVs come with a range of processors? We were at a hotel last night, a Samsumg 40" or so telly. The SD quality was basically rubbish, a very mushy picture. HD was just about OK, provided the image didn't pan vary much. If the camera moved sideways more than very slowly, things became very jerky. Material was that weekly gardening programme.



I'm assuming this would have been a bulk-buy of a low-end model with inferior electronics. Would that be a fair assessment?


They do... both CPUs for running the SMART apps etc, and video processors for doing the display and decoding stuff.

That may be more of a reflection of the source content than the screen.

It might be, but not necessarily. In general these things have got better with time (certainly video processor wise). Many sets are a bit lacking in CPU oomph for handling smart content (you only need compare the web browser performance of a smart TV against a real computer to see they are pretty short changed in the processing capabilities)

Often the TV picture can be vastly improved by turning off a lot of gimmicky features the the manufacturer have turned on by default and by properly adjusting the contrast and colour saturation.

I doubt if TV in hotels have ever been adjusted and may even still be in shop mode rather than in living room mode.

The processors that are used are similar to those used in phones. Often the important bit in the GPU. Without knowing the model it's difficult to tell.

I use my smart TV with a separate box for anything over the internet and get a far better quality of picture.

There are a wide range of processors and proprietary algorithms for generating intermediate frames about. Some of them have defective MPEG implementations. The worst offending content is usually SD downsampled originally HD or QD broadcast material.

Almost certainly. The buggiest TV chipset had some of the dynamic JPEG coefficients handled with the opposite phase to reality so that shallow angle diagonal lines (newscasters desks are ideal) actually look like a sawtooth if you inspect them very closely when the camera pans.

From a distance it looks like the entire image is a little bit blurry whenever there is movement. It resets every time an index frame is transmitted and then slowly deteriorates. I'm a bit surprised that Samsung kit has a problem today - I thought it had been fixed years ago.

Ah, shop mode - I'd forgotten about that. I did try turning the colour down quite a lot but it didn't seem to help, perhaps that's why.

The basic video processing side of things is now a well cracked nut and devices are dirt cheap so no point in skimping.

Video quality (of lack of) more likely to be a combination of incorrect contast/hue/brightness setup together with the screen being a cheap low res TN LCD panel.

Remember having to Google to find instructions on how to get a 'normal' picture out of a top of the range Samsung, some years ago. Factory settings seemed to be to impress in a shop display using advertising videos.
