Toilet flush - bad vibrations ........

Well, not 'bad' but annoying ................. a couple of weeks ago the water pipe to my toilet started to vibrate whenever the toilet was flushed. There is only one toilet on the property and running water from the various taps doesn't cause a problem.

The vibrations start when the toilet is flushed and ease off as it refills. It's also possible to ease off the vibrations by turning on a tap after a flush, so slowing down the speed of the influx of water into the cistern.

Is this problem likely to be caused by something simple in the loft (it's a bungalow) such as a loose bracket that secures the pipe in place?

Or could it somehow be caused by the cistern itself?

Thanks

Have you recently turned the water off at the stop c*ck and back on? If so you may have opened the valve further than it was and introduced the problem. Otherwise, these noises can occur if the toilet cistern is controlled by the old fashioned style ball float. Sometimes the rubber washer which forms the seal can harden and vibrate causing a kind of mini water hammer action. Could try changing the float valve washer, float valve complete and/or fitting the modern diaphragm type valve.

No, but the water pressure in my fairly remote location DOES tend to vary from time to time, so perhaps I ought to turn down the stop c*ck a bit?

Yup, it's that type of valve.

I see, is there a place online with diagrams which would point to this washer so I know what to replace?

I assume that would be a complete replacement mechanism, ie from the ball c*ck to the arm that connects to the rest of the mechanism?

Presumably the actual flush mechanism would remain?

Would a modern diaphragm type valve cost a lot?

There's plenty of us about. :)

Thanks for your help Phil

B&Q do (or used to do) a cistern repair kit that contains all the bits you are likely to need - washers, split pins, etc.
