Stud finders

Trying to locate a concealed wooden fixing behind a tiled/plasterboard wall. Are 'stud finders' any good for this? My previous experiences is with metal detectors that looked for powered cables (there aren't any), nails (there are few) or pipes (there are several, but they're red herrings). I read that some are able to use capacitance to trace out what's beneath the surface - would they be any good for this kind of problem? Would the tiles confuse things? Tried tapping the wall, but the results are inconclusive. Cheers, Theo

I have a cable detector I made years ago, its simple and works very well. I 've never had enough need / got the round tuit to make a capacitance type p assive object detector. Its not hard to do tho if you can do basic electron ics. 2 oscillating circuits, one with a search coil one without, multiply t o hear the frequency difference. The higher the frequency, the more sensiti ve.

So far I've just resorted to drilling holes on occasion. Sometimes 2mm is a ll you need.
