Thanks for the advice I got here over painting a new house name. This is what I did in the end:
Printed out the desired text. Made a plaque and painted black. Taped the paper over the plaque and with a sharp biro type pen traced over the character outlines, making a feint impression on the black paint. Carefully filled in the shapes with white (twice) and touched up.
I am really pleased with it. Admire it below. I think if you were doing black on white you might need to use carbon paper or something.
