Sawing wood at a local joiners

I went to buy wood at a local joiner, and asked for it to be cut to size. They claimed they can't do so, because of safety regulations. Yet they will allow me to use their saw! Surely this is backwards way first? They prefer a random stranger to a trained workman using the saw?!

Does seem strange. do they have third party or public liability insurance? May well be they can claim it was your fault if you cut your hand in half. Brian

You'd think insuring their own (trained) staff would be cheaper. And if they can blame me, why can't they blame their workers? With most things, the company seems to have to look out for the public, this is backwards way first.

We have the same close to me. I assume that (if its like my yard) they lend you a hand saw, not let you loose with their machines. If so I suspect what they say and what they mean might be different.

"because of safety regulations" might mean "because of our insurance policy". If they have staff regularly cutting wood the insurance premium might be higher.

"because of safety regulations" might mean "because we want him doing something useful, not cutting your wood"

"because of safety regulations" is a brilliant catch all that can be used whenever you cant be arsed to display the real reason.

Surely the premium would be higher for the same number of cuts done by non-professionals, resulting in more accidents?

His claim was it was not their responsibility at all if I hurt myself with their saw. But it was if it was an employee. I find that hard to believe, surely I can sue them just as easily as an employee?

Agreed.

Agreed.
