Retiling Bathroom

Good morning all, I've removed all the old tiles from my bathroom and a lot of the thin, skim layer of the plaster decided to come off too. Do I need to re-plaster the wall before re-tiling, or can I just tile straight onto the rough plaster? If the latter is the case, do I need to seal the wall with something first? Thanks all, WM

You can, if you think you can keep them level.

It's not that easy working with thick and irregular cement beds on ANY tiles.

I'd be tempted to nail thin battens on the walls ensuring they are parallel in all planes, and use bonding plaster between them with a batten dragged over the top to ensure a level surface to tile over. No need for smoothness at the granule level - just an overall 'flat' surface is what you need.

Or use strings and battens to tile up to temprarily and use the thick cement bed.

I.e. construct a 'picture frame' of battens and tile inside it up to the level of thee battens, using a straight edge to check each tile, then remove battens and fiinish the corners and edges.

Unless the tiles are subject to being totally soaked by water which can hang around, or condensation that also is maintained over long periods (in which case some insulation/heating/ventilation is needed) there is no need to seal anything. Tiles are waterproof, the only danger is soaking wet grout, which is a bit permeable.
