Removing mould / mildew

Hi All,

My daughter (dontcha love em!) left the window in her house (log cabin) open for a few weeks and some items inside now have a green bloom on them. A rush seat chair, and a straw sun hat.

Any tips on how to remove the offending stuff such that they look clean and dont have any life threatening life forms on them would be most appreciated.

TIA

Chris

As always, experiment on small invisible patches first.

If they're resistant to water and mild bleaching without changing colour (i.e. leather isn't), first vacuum them for dust & spores, wash with water and then scrub away discolouration with some hydrogen peroxide. For real mould problems on wood (old fruit in fruitbowls!) you might need oxalic acid (Barkeeper's Friend).

If you're getting into conservation-restoration territory of valuable items read the amol.org.au reCollections museum conservation site.
