Thank you for all the advice. As shortage of time ruled out ordering any tools over t'internet I went for Pete C's idea and dragged a crosscut saw down and across the walls. It nearly creased me but it made some brilliant, deep scratches through the vinyl silk. After that the steamer made surprisingly easy work of it.
