The definitive stuff was once linen backed lining paper. Dunno if you can still get it.

Distemper varies, its not a single formulation. Normally hot water & detergent gets it off. There is/was also a fair bit of whitewash about from long ago.

Ours is older. It's got 3d bumps in it, and paper wouldn't go over them.

I guess Dave's linen backed stuff might.
