Potential scam, or a wrong number?

I had tow calls asking for some female. Possibly Karen. The second time I asked how they had got the number... 'Its on a CV we have' and what job is she applying for....? 'accuracy specialist'

Hmmm....

I think it was 0245.... I put it into one of the *who calls* services and they said it was central London. They were not sure it was a scam call so I didn't report it.

It's is amazing how poor they are with *really* basic and obvious questions... Credit card fraud? "Which card are we talking about?, What bank, last 4 digits etc?", Or amazon prime: "sorry which amazon account? What email address?". My internet has been compromised by hackers? "Which ISP, I have more than one connection?"

Answers are usually "Your visa card", "reads you a phone number", and "TalkTalk" or "openreach")

Silent calls are a good way of identifying "live" numbers which can then be sold on.

Most terminate after eight rings and are a good reason for using call recognition, if available, before picking up the phone.

Unrecognised numbers can be subsequebtly Googles to discover their source and whether they merit calling back.

If it was a wrongly dialled number presumably they'd already know what was wrong with your house ?

  • Er as I never pick up the phone (and haven't for years) I have no way of knowing whether they're silent calls or not

What I should have said, is that most spam calls terminate after eight rings. I get a spam call from a new source around once a fortnight/three weeks on average. Most of which feature on the "Who called me" sites. They may call back the next day and the day after that but then invariably give up.

I have just thought to try ringing the number back, to find out out if it might have been a genuine call, to a wrong number - my number in error.

The call came from 01709 248741 or at least that was the number recorded. Ringing that number, it just said 'you have dialled an incorrect number.'

0245 is Coventry, apparently.

If you do decide to return the call, you can see the number that your phone is about to dial. So, if it looks overseas or premium rate, stop it dialling.

Is that an admission you're a spammer to this group, using multiple IDs to get past killfiles? Where many rate your posts as spam and block you accordingly.

It should be clear that what is spam to one person, may be wanted by another. That's why, really speaking, spam filtering can only be done by the recipient, who should then train their software's anti-spam system to recognise what the recipient considers to be spam.

Unlikely with the worst spam.

But the server when its as big as google etc can easily detect spam by the sheer volume of the posts that are identical in all but the name of the addressee. That is something no recipient can do.

Yeah but, is there *anyone* who actually gives a flying frig what rodent speed has to say on anything?

Sadly, judging by the number of people here who insist on engaging with him, it would see, that some do. I really wish they wouldn’t.

I am on of those, and do so to correct his many false claims. If you killfile him, and use the filter to delete the corresponding subthread, you won't see my replies either.

Too much effort. Just add each nym to your filter as it appears. And it looks like another immature marsupial has popped up.

I don't see anyone else backing up your assertion you can drill 400mm into a granite wall and maintain mm accuracy.

Does being proved wrong on so many occasions annoy you perchance?

Whilst the urge to add some “signal” to all the noise is understandable, as it just stirs up more noise, it’s kinda self-defeating. Ignoring trolls is the only tactic that helps to reduce the noise.

You’re making assumptions about folks kill-filing options. The options are pretty limited in my client.

So what you are saying is you don't need to be mm accurate for the two

10mm holes to miraculously align.
