Plastering query

Have been requested to skim a chimney breast. Removed old wall paper and underneath was pretty rough with a paint satin/silk finish which is generally hanging well on. Can I just pva the area and skim, or should the paint be removed? The wallpaper was happy to stay on, so will a skim coat?

Dear Mike Why replaster? If you have to then use SBR not PVA as pva can re-emulsify Put sbr in the mix as well as applying when it is still sticky Chris

Providing the paint is not coming off, you can plaster over it (onto a still tacky PVA layer). However, bear in mind that the plaster will be heavy, wet, and hanging on the paintwork for

24 hours, and the paintwork will need to remain well-stuck through that. People sometimes think wallpaper is stuck on really well and plaster over it, only to find that keeping it damp for 24 hours and hanging the weight of plaster on it is actually a really good way to strip off stubburn wallpaper in whole sheets;-)

PVA is fine with plaster. If there's enough moisture around to reemulsify the PVA, you'll be greatful as it will aide removal of the wrecked plaster ;-) Don't mix it in the plaster as it can interfere with the subsequent bonding of new paint and other finishes to the wall.

Thanks to all ............. I will ensure the surface is firm all over and will scour it as well to provide more key and use PVA as usual.
