Painting 'cardboard' wall

Hello! We're redecorating our entrance hall and while removing the wallpaper off one of the walls we noticed that it was some sort of cardboard instead of plaster. The idea is to paint this wall but I'm not sure how I'm going to do that now. Should I plaster it first (not sure if it's possible because of said cardboard)? Or should I remove the whole thing and then plaster it? I'm not sure what's actually underneath. Any help is appreciated!

Pretty sure that's unskimmed plasterboard. (PB is 2 layers of card sandwiching a gypsum core).

You're probably screwed and skimming is probably the only way to get it decent after it's been scraped removing paper.

Or replace the PB if the skin has structural rather than cosmetic damage.

I can't poke it from here but it looks like standard plasterboard. If the s urface is ok just paint it. If it needs bits filling, do.

If it's an uneven mess all over then plaster skimming would be the way to g o - or you could replace the plasterboard & patch fill as the current one i s done.

I always caution pepople against overfilling dents/holes & sanding. It neve r works well. This is doubly or triply true with plasterboard, which has a paper finish. Sanding will get you a guaranteed fail. If you need to fill b its, don't let one single grain of sand come above the level surface when f illing. If you need to take 3 goes to get the hole full & smooth no problem , but don't make the mistake of overfilling.
