I sold my mother's car for her last weekend. Went on-line to change the V5. A cheque for the road tax refund (dated the following day) arrived from DVLA on Wednesday. I suspect the new owner received their V5 the same day. However, no humans involved !
As the last couple of applications have been because of address changes, I send Mrs C's back in the same 2nd class envelope as mine. I bet it's pointless though, may as well stick them through a shredder, just like for expired credit cards

My D46P says "Please return your current driving licence with this application."
With the current speed of operation, it could waste a lot of time to test this out.

Maybe, but as I say I've never sent the old one back, before receiving the new one, and the new one comes pretty quickly
