Odd GU10 lighting

Four rows of three GU10 downlights, each row switched by 1 switch on a 4 gang switch.

1 lamp in one of the rows comes on for about 20 mins, then goes off for about the same time, then comes on again etc. The other 2 lamps in the rows are normal, as are the other rows.

Seems like it might be something to do with overheating maybe?

Any ideas?

Mains or low voltage?

If low voltage, they may have one transformer per lamp, and the intermittent one has gone faulty ... if mains voltage then dodgy contact?

Are they LED or halogen?

If halogen, it may have a broken filament which is making and breaking with the heat.

Sorry, missed out the important bit - mains.

Halogen. Client has changed lamps but the problem has returned. However, they were B&Q el cheapo's, so that might be a clue.

If you have some mini test leads (like ebay 270526643114) then you could attach a test screwdriver in that socket and see if the switching still happens without a local heat source.

I'd suspect a dodgy connection on the fitting. I have a 12v downlighter that has a tendency to go off randomly, Moving the wires on the back of the fitting brings the light on for a while, then it goes off again.

Thus spake The Medway Handyman ( snipped-for-privacy@blueyonder.co.uk) unto the assembled multitudes:

I have a similar problem with a 5-lamp GU10 fitting with CFL lamps; one of the lamps keeps going off but it stays off. With a bit of fiddling it will come on again but rarely stays on for long. I don't think it's a thermal issue because the CFLs run pretty cool (they're only 7W each after all). I also have a four-lamp GU10 CFL fitting in my lounge but that never gives any trouble. I guess it's just a weak connection in there somewhere.
