Now I've found one...

...It's ages since I visited my local (miserable bastard) timber merchant, can anyone give me a rough idea how much the following sizes of timber, planed, typically cost per metre?

2"x4" (whatever the metric equivalent is) 2"x6" 2"x10"

================================== Quite expensive at the moment (20% price increase in last 6 months). I bought 6 metres of PAR 6" x 1" last week - cost about 12 GB pounds. My local yard seems to charge by the cubic foot whatever shape so 3" x 2" costs the same as 6" x 1" etc. By this standard your 6" x 2" would cost about 4 GB pounds per metre in West Midlands. Other sizes / prices pro rata.

Wickes appear to be about 25% cheaper but sizes are limited and quality isn't the best.

I expected nothing less. That's my luck, that is.

Righto, thanks muchly.

No, you have to root through all the packs, picking out the good lengths!

=================================== I can't be bothered to do that so I buy quality at a higher price. Strangely, Wickes can be significantly cheaper for some kinds of timber such as fencing materials, contiboard etc.

are there any? IME the ratio of good to bad is so low that its rarely worth the time.

No, it's not something I do a lot. IIRC it was just one or two occasions when I wanted one bit of batten or something to finish a job. I remember getting my hand stuck on a substantial lump of pine resin once. Horrible sticky crap. Smells nice though :)

I'm paying £2:15 a metre. Tanalised, very straight, very smooth for sawn. Local timber merchant, anything from 2.4m to 6.0m lengths.
