New BT Phone scam!!!

In real life hospitals CAN (and do) reveal a caller ID if they can't contact a relative. In this day and age there are better ways of protecting caller anonymity without blanket number withholding. As long as police/hospitals/businesses withhold numbers they are making it easier for scammers.

If our local DGH can do it so can they all.

Ask them why they're supporting scammers.

Or if want you to help them in an ongoing investigation. Recent experience shows that they withhold their number and leave a message asking you to ring them. But when you do that a) it is an expensive number; b) you struggle to get through to the person who called you; c) if they offer to call back, or get the right person to do so, you go through the whole process again. All because they won't, even when invited to, present a number.

If only. The snag is many switchboards have lines designated as outgoing only. So would have to be fiddled to give a genuine number you could call back. And of course the switchboard could well not have a clue who called you from there anyway.

Pity about all the rest that don?t bother and about those who have just borrowed a phone and can't do anything about what the operation they borrowed the phone from does about that.

Sure, but that doesn?t mean that they all agree with you about that and so it makes no sense at all to just ignore all phone calls that do not present a caller ID.

Skype out for example is very erratic indeed about whether it presents a caller ID and so it makes no sense whatever to just ignore all calls that don?t present a caller ID.

That is just plain wrong. They don?t all have the same exchanges and don?t all have bureaucrats that can be convinced to do what you want.

and at BBC TV Centre the outgoing calls used a different exchange from the published number!

Well the argument is somewhat moot for me anyway as with truecall withheld numbers CAN get through if they follow instructions. It can be set to block all withheld number or to make callers announce themselves.

Interesting that you can now spot Wodney after the first word...

Or make sure you get lots of other calls from similar organizations. ;-)

Bit about it on the radio today. The usual - register with TPS. Complete waste of time here.

So far today my call blocker has prevented 9 unwanted calls. I have better things to do than bait scammers or just answering the phone to valueless calls.

I get 1 or 2 of these calls a day, and as I'm not there when they call it doesn;t bother me too much, what bothered me more was a friend rings up the other night at 1am telling me he's mouse wasn't working propery.
