Well the sych rate matches the attenuation, even if the attenuation seems a bit high for the length... that could just reflect some ali cable in the local run though.

Hard to know what is going on with that one then... 8 meg at 3 miles seems implausible. Have the moved the whole exchange?

Possibly but more likely my memory is at fault. The 3 miles I thought I had was worked out several years ago. Streetmap has helpfully given me the position of the exchange and the direct line distance appears to be somewhat under 3km. Still further away than my exchange but no longer abusing the laws of physics. Just a clean connection?

Yup... remember also the distance estimates assume plain copper all the way. Sections of ali or just some poor connections, taps, or other connections to the copper along the way will also have a negative effect.

Sorry, should have also said, its sometimes possible to get BT to do what they call a "lift and shift", i.e. moving a line onto a different pair altogether. Sometimes this is done when there are persisting BB problems with a particular line.

I was going to suggest that - I know quite a few people who use vfast around here and rate it highly

Not around here thats to say South Cambridgeshire. There have been some wireless distribution systems in the past in this area, but when BT lights up the local exchange .. then they disappear.

I'm quite surprised if that operator can cover all the area they allude to. We have some experience of using 5.8 Ghz but its very much hindered by tree foliage and this area is rather green!. I have a link unit in my back yard but just one Leylandii is every so slightly in the way and thats taken a 100 % link down to around 17 in a couple of years so it does surprise me if its as good as claimed.

We have done odd links on a "line of sight" basis and they can go for miles .. and well a long way!.

This can work if you have say a street level distribution system and the distances are very short, but thats a lot of infrastructure to have in place..

Then changing to FTTC might not be worth it for you. When we were on ADSL streaming any kind of video was a waste of time, we got a second of video and then 30 seconds of buffering.

Probably in Aus $ rather than US...
