Making good fireplace

Hello,

My mother has had a new boiler installed and the back boiler that used to be behind the (now defunct) gas fire in the living room has been removed. Obviously this has left a rather large void at the bottom of the chimney where it meets the fireplace :-) What should be used to make this good in order that a new gas fire can be installed. Anything special or will just ordinary bricks and mortar do? Probably looking to have a inset coal effect gas fire fitted.

TIA

It's quite possibly that very little will have to be done as the inset gas fire may be designed for a 'standard builder's opening' which is what you should have had with the boiler.

Thanks but there is a gap where the pipes to the back boiler came down (and still do) and the old fire was an "in front of the fireplace" sort of thing. Would these not need to be sealed - the chimeny sweep allegedly tested the place with a smoke pellet and said there may not be enough draft or something and also that the making good was needed.

Regards.
