loose cover shrinkage

Apr 14, 2012 6 Replies

For some unknown reason, possibly the onset of spring and a decorator in the house, SWMBO threw the loose cover from a bed/settee into the washing m/c.

You guessed, it is now 5% smaller and beyond my strength to force fit!

Is this situation re-coverable by any d-i-y trick or is it er.. curtains?

regards

SWMBO heer just shook her head and uttered the immortal words: "It's buggered"

She did think you might try steaming it, but didn't realy think it was likely to work.

We used to have a couple of sofas with loose covers. Making them damp (or rather, not letting them dry completely) seemed to make it slightly easier to refit. They then dried nice and tight on the sofa.

Dunno if making it damp would help you or if the damage is already done...

Chuck it through a cool wash with a good helping of fabric conditioner, may create enough give in the material to stretch it over the frame.

How about fitting it whilst still damp?

It _might_ work - I've steamed and stretched shrunken cotton curtains, and gained back several inches in length.

It should do - it works with my t-shirts every time I forget and bung them in the dryer.
